Despite what the brochures and websites had to say about it, Fiddler’s Cove was not, in fact, the perfect seaside community. Like any municipality, it had its share of streets one wouldn’t want to walk down in the dark.

One such street was Cutter’s Row. The ominous sounding name had originally been meant to honor a philanthropist and fisherman named Captain Cutter. Now, it seemed all too appropriate, given the likelihood of spilled blood.

Ruby met up with John around noon outside the Ritz movie theatre, the unofficial boundary between the decent side of town and those places not so brightly lit.

“Hey,” Ruby said as they approached.

“Hey yourself.” John pulled her into a hug. She clung to him for a moment, exulting in the feel of his body against her own. They pulled away, and Ruby took in the sight of his fashion choices.

“What are you wearing?”

“I’m in disguise. I don’t want to scare away potential witnesses by wearing my uniform.”

Ruby slapped a hand over her mouth in a vain attempt to stifle a laugh. “Wow. Okay. First of all, no one’s worn white jeans since 1986. Second, Disturbed is considered old people music now, and third…no one’s going to mistake a hulking wall of muscle like you for anyone else.”

“I’m open to suggestions,” John said, looking down at himself as if seeing his garments for the first time.

“Nothing a little magic can’t fix.”

Rumpus trotted up, ears swiveled forward. “I think he looks great—”

“Thanks, Rumpus.”

“—but then again, I’m just a cat. I don’t wear clothes.”

Ruby sighed. “Hold still.”

She chanted the words of an illusion glamour as she pictured John’s new appearance in her mind. Ruby added stubble to his face, flattened his nose out a bit as if it had been broken badly at some point, and darkened his white jeans to a faded blue. She also thinned him out a bit, making him seem less like the imposing beast he was.

Ruby altered her own appearance to be a little older, rougher, and shabbily dressed. She added a yellow rain hat as an homage to her uncle, and, on a whim, gave herself a glass eye.

“Hey there, sonny,” she cackled in a witch voice. “Come over here and give us a kiss.”

John laughed. “That’s amazing. Nice work.”

“Thank you. I’m not the strongest illusionist in the world, but I get by.”

“You could have fooled me.”

“What about my disguise?” Rumpus asked eagerly.

“Disguise? What am I supposed to disguise you as?”

“A seeing-eye dog?” John asked.

“Perfect.”

“No, wait, don’t you dare make me look like a dog!”

“Then what? Half the town has seen me pushing you around in the stroller. There aren’t many gigantic orange cats running around.”

“Well, make me a tiger, then.”

“A tiger? That’s supposed to somehow be…” Ruby sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “Look, I’m just going to turn you invisible, and you can ride on my…”

She considered how hefty Rumpus had gotten in recent years.

“…John’s shoulders.”

“Yes, invisible! I like it. The enemies will never see me coming. I will sweep in like silent, invisible death.
